Couple dies, 6 hurt in wild bear attack in Srikakulam district

Visakhapatnam: A couple died and six persons were injured, three of them critically, when a wild bear attacked them at Yerramukkam under Sompeta mandal in Srikakulam district on Sunday.

Angry villagers chased down the bear and killed it later near Pitali. The victims were identified as Baipilli Urmila, 40, and her husband Baipilli Tirupati Rao, 45, of Yerramukkam.

Sources said that the incident took place early on Sunday on the outskirts of the village where the cash-ew nut trees were grown, The bear attacked Urmila while she and a few others were working on an agricultural field. Upon noticing this, her husband and six others rushed the spot to try and fight off the bear and rescue her.

Their efforts to save her went in vain and they were injured. All the injured were rushed to the government hospital at Palasa where Urmila died while undergoing treatment. With the condition of four injured turning critical, they were shifted to King George Hospital in Vizag where Tirupathi Rao died. The condition of one of the injured, B. Dury-odhana, is said to be critical.
