Cops tighten vigil at cable bridge after suicide

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police have increased surveillance on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge following a recent incident of death by suicide and increased numbers of motorists stopping to click pictures.

Officials said that personnel will be deployed at the bridge till midnight to ensure that vehicles do not stop there arbitrarily and that no untoward incident takes place.

Since the bridge was opened in September 2020, around 10 persons have died by suicide.

Traffic officials said that of late, people celebrating birthdays or friends meeting up after long are doing so at the cable bridge. They park vehicles on roads, narrowing the main carriageway of the road.

“We started issuing traffic challans for parking on the bridge and have also taken up campaigns on various platforms to make motorists aware,” traffic officials said.

The police said they also have a crane available round-the-clock along with task force officers to ensure vehicles do not stop here.

The police said that to prevent suicide bids, they had asked the civic authorities to fence the bridge, but they rejected the proposal as it would disturb the aesthetics.
