Udupi: 7 missing fishermen’s kin to get Rs 10 lakh

Udupi: Udupi district in-charge minister Dr Jayamala said that the state government has ordered the payment of Rs 10 lakh compensation to family members of the seven fishermen who were aboard ‘Suvarna Thribhuja,’ a fishing boat which sank about four and a half months ago.

'Suvarna Thribhuja,' left Malpe fishing harbour on December 13, 2018 and later went missing. Its whereabouts remained unknown till Indian Navy officials accompanied by fishermen found the wreck of the vessel off the Malvan coast (Maharashtra) on May 1. The find was confirmed on May 2 by Naval divers.

After having concluded that the fishing boat had sunk, the government has initiated steps to provide compensation. Of the Rs 10 lakh the government intends to provide the kin of each fisherman, Rs 6 lakh would be from the Fishermen Distress Relief Fund and Rs 4 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The money would be transferred directly to the kin of the deceased.
