Kottayam: Jacobite bishop offers to resign
Kottayam: The Jacobite church’s Niranam Bishop Geevarghese Mar Koorilose has said he is ready to renounce all positions if the Orthodox faction is ready for peace in the church dispute case.
Mar Koorilose was addressing a ‘Way of the cross’ procession organised by the Samadhana Janakeeya Samiti to the Orthodox Bishop’s house at Devalokam on Friday.
The procession, led by priests of the Jacobite Church and Knanaya Jacobite church, was stopped by the police at the Logos Junction here. The marchers protested by sitting on the road after it was blocked by the police.
“Certain people allege that I am proffering similar initiatives to get positions in the church. However, I want to clarify that there should be peace in the church and if that is possible I am ready to renounce the positions I am holding in the Church,” the Bishop said.
He said that no one can be a victor in disputes among the churches. “War is not the weapon for peace. I have denounced those who possess the land by planting a cross,” he said. He added that the Way of Cross is of tolerance and patience.
He demanded that those who did not understand God should try to know Mahatma Gandhi. He wondered why some people were creating turbulence in the name of court verdicts and legal fights.
He pointed out that in the Mepral Church, the Orthodox and Jacobite factions are celebrating Mass on the basis of equal rights. The construction and renovation activities were conducted on the basis of forming joint committees of two factions. However, the opposite faction says that the Jacobite section will not be allowed to enter the church, the Bishop said.
Former MP Scaria Thomas inaugurated the procession. Knanaya Jacobite church Ranni Bishop Kuriakose Mar Ivanios was among the others who were present on the occasion.
