Kochi: ‘Never Me’ to train women in self-defence

The initiative is in response to the #MeToo campaign which helped several sexual harassment victims to speak out.

KOCHI: After the #MeToo campaign that exposed the high and mighty who sexually harassed women shook the world, it's now time for another one: Never Me.

The campaign, initiated by former member of the Kerala State Women's Commission Prof. Monamma Kokad, aims at bringing down the incidence of sexual assault against women. Providing proper training in self-defence is one of the tools that the campaign advocates.

"The initiative is in response to the #MeToo campaign which helped several sexual harassment victims to speak out. The Never Me campaign tries to encourage women to realise the importance of the phrase 'I will never be a victim, I am my own protector, I will lead myself," said Prof. Kokkad. "The Me Too campaign allows victims to come forward and open up while the Never Me initiative attempts to ensure that there are no victims of sexual assault. The campaign will be launched in primary school, followed by high schools and colleges. Training will be given to girls by a group of women teachers and NGO volunteers," she said.

Kochi mayor Soumini Jain launched the campaign logo in Kochi on Friday. Launching the logo, the mayor said women must be given awareness and training to prevent them from being victims of assault. "Training must be conducted in every school and it should be included as part of school syllabus," she said.
