Dharmapuri: Two women beaten up for rescuing minor girl from child marriage

The two child line female volunteers were beaten up brutally in the process and were admitted to the government hospital here for severe injuries.

Dharmapuri: Two women including a government staff were brutally beaten up by an angry mob for rescuing a 17-year-old girl, a victim of early marriage, in Pavalathur village in Pennagaram block in Dharmapuri district.

On Friday, the Dharmapuri child line workers with the support of social welfare department staff and the local police rescued a minor girl given in marriage to her relative groom.

As the child line workers were returning to Dharmapuri town with the rescued victim in a state-run bus, a mob followed them, accosted the bus, gained entry into it and attempted to take back the girl with them.

The two child line female volunteers, Ms Vaitheeswari and Ms. Saroja, were beaten up brutally in the process and were admitted to the government hospital here for severe injuries. A case has been registered at Athiyamankottai police station and investigations are on including to trace the poor minor girl’s whereabouts.
