Bengaluru: Pink polling stations for women

Booths to have ramps and braille for physically challenged and visually impaired voters.

Bengaluru: All arrangements are in place for elections to 27 assembly constituencies in the city except Jayanagar , where the poll had been countermanded due to the death of the BJP candidate, B N Vijayakumar, BBMP commissioner and district election officer, Maheshwar Rao said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters here, he said those who had not got their voter slips could still get them from the voter assistant booths on producing their voter ID or any one of the other 11 recognised ID proofs. Also a 100 pink polling stations manned by women had been set up in constituencies with a large number of women voters to encourage them to come out and vote, he revealed. Arrangements have been made for the physically challenged and the visually impaired to cast their votes. Booths will have both ramps and braille for their convenience.

"Sale of liquor will be banned from 5 pm on May 10 to midnight of May 12. The ban will also be in force on the day of counting from 7 am till midnight," Mr Rao added. While no party was allowed to hold rallies and so on from 7 pm Thursday, door-to-door campaigning was permitted, he explained.

“Political functionaries, party workers, and others, who are not voters of the constituency, should have left it by 7 pm on Thursday and candidates will not be allowed to campaign in a 100 m radius from the polling stations,” Mr Rao added. As always, polling day, May 12 has been declared a public holiday. The officer said that since the model code of conduct came into effect, Rs 6.8 crores had been seized in cash. Also seized were 11, 699 litres of liquor worth Rs 5.29 crore, and 39,654 goods worth Rs 19.43 crore.
