Telangana: Smart meters to give power to Discoms
The Centre wants consumers across the country to have smart meters as a part of power reforms.

Hyderabad: The TS Southern Power Distribution Company is implementing a smart grid project at Jeedimetla Industrial Development Area.
This will be a pilot project and the southern discom will install smart meters for all categories of consumers in Jeedimetla area.
The smart meter system will benefit discoms and consumers. It will help discoms by reducing transmission losses and consumers as they will pay real-time tariff. The discom has asked Electronic Corporation of India to supply 10,000 smart meters.
The smart meter for single phase line costs Rs 7,000 and for three-phase line costs Rs 11,000. SPDCL is setting up these meters free of cost.
The Centre wants consumers across the country to have smart meters as a part of power reforms. Transco will set up smart meters for all consumers in the state in a phased manner.
Officials said smart meters will help consumers to identify situations where they are using a lot of energy and try and reduce usage.
This will, over time, help them bring down their power bills. Consumers will get accurate bills and will pay for what they actually used. Once the smart grid and smart meters are in use across the state, consumers will get cheaper tariffs at off-peak times.
Discom director (Projects & IT) T. Srinivas said after studying the pilot project results, they would set up smart meters in the entire TS.
Mr Srinivas said that they are setting up a data centre at Erragadda and have ordered three companies to supply smart meters. The Centre will provide 60 per cent of the funds needed for the smart grid project centre, he said.
