Reforms in the police force are essential as we still operate with the tools and mechanisms that the Britishers designed to keep us enslaved. A democratic country needs a far more citizen-friendly policing system. Our children probably fear the sight of a policeman when they should be comfortable seeking his assistance. Also, the burden of policing can be lightened by introducing community policing. Unfortunately not enough is being done in this direction.
In addition we need to modernise the police force with new technology and improve the efficiency of the system. Any visit to a police station to file an FIR will make you realise it is an uphill task to convince the police to register it as they are reluctant to take cases on record.
This reluctance emboldens criminals and only makes citizens lose faith in the system. The police also need writers who can take down FIRs in regional languages. These are a few issues that need to be addressed.
