Hyderabad: Thunderstorms brought rain

The force is tremendous and so is the intensity of the wind, which moves horizontally to the ground.

Hyderabad: Khairatabad, Yousufguda and Srinagar Colony received 9.6 cm of rainfall in a span of few hours, the highest in the city on Tuesday. Medchal, Malkajgiri, Balanagar and Begumpet received 6 cm of rain while areas of Bowenpally, Begumpet and Alwal saw a shower of hailstones.

The thunderstorm landed during the late hours and hit Northern Hyderabad first; it swiftly moved towards the Central and Western corridor of the city and further beyond Shamshabad towards Mahabub Nagar and Nagarkurnool. Hyderabad and its surrounding 200 km received heavy rainfall.

The dense towering vertical Cumulus nimbus clouds, a common feature during summer, were responsible for Tuesday’s thunderstorm, experts said.

These clouds, which are associated with storms, are formed during hot weather conditions. When warm air moves up into cooler layers of atmosphere, it condenses into water droplets and forms the thunder cloud.

High-intensity wind: Before the rain hits the ground, heavy winds grip the area because the rain drops pushed existing air downwards when they start falling from the cloud.

The force is tremendous and so is the intensity of the wind, which moves horizontally to the ground. When the winds flow downwards, after the Cumulus nimbus clouds are about to burst, they are called down draft.
