Hyderabad: Old clogged drains at Saipuri colony led to flooding of bastis

A power cut that lasted between one and three hours in different areas of this division on Tuesday midnight also added to residents' woes.

Hyderabad: The old drainage system built in the 1980s in Saipuri Colony and JLNS Nagar, which fall in Goutham Nagar division of Malkajgiri circle, could not bear the impact of the heavy downpour on Tuesday. The water accumulation led to choked pipelines, and water entered a few houses and bastis in low-lying areas.

R.Shirisha, the local corporator, said they put up a proposal for improving the drainage system in view of increased population in the area over the years.

"The proposal is lying with engineering department and we want to push our case in the coming days," she said.

A power cut that lasted between one and three hours in different areas of this division on Tuesday midnight also added to residents' woes.

A similar problem was noticed in Kakatiya Nagar and places adjoining Banda Cheruvu in Vinayaknagar. Some water crept into cellars of a few apartments, but alert residents ensured there was no damage.

Meanwhile, officials and local politicians went around Malkajgiri division on bicycles to take stock of the situation following the downpour. Water was flowing at some speed in open nalas and local corporator Jagdeesh Goud requested authorities to ensure that retaining walls are built in Durga Nagar and Patel Nagar.
