Five Dalit women stripped, paraded naked in UP

Lucknow: Exactly a year after five Dalit women were stripped and paraded naked in Hareva village in Shahjahanpur district, another Dalit woman was subjected to a similar ordeal on Monday in the same district.

According to reports reaching here, land dispute between two groups in Khairatia village in Khutar took an ugly turn when people of one group entered the house of the Dalit woman, belonging to another group, on Sunday night when her husband and other family members were not present.

The men pulled the woman out of her house, stripped her completely and beat her up. The accused men then paraded her naked through the village. The victim was being constantly slapped and beaten with sticks and rods. When she fainted, the accused men dumped her near a pond and fled.

On Monday morning, when the woman regained consciousness, she went to her relatives in the adjoining village and with them she went to the police station but the cops refused to register her complaint.

ASP Ramesh Kumar out rightly denied the incident and said that the allegations from the woman were a result of the family dispute. He said that a police official had been sent to the village and no one admitted to the incident of stripping the woman. The woman and her family members accused the police of being hand-in-glove with the accused persons.

It may be recalled that in May 2015, five Dalit women had been stripped and paraded naked in Hareva village because a young man belonging to an OBC caste had eloped with a Dalit girl and the boy’s family wanted to teach the girl’s community a lesson.
