According to police sources, Makarov had gone for a swim near Mahabalipuram Beach with a friend on Tuesday.
It was a holy dip that ended in a tragedy for two families as their family members drowned near Sagarnagar beach.
Chennai: A 55-year-old Russian national, who was in the city to take part in the DefExpo, drowned in the sea near Mahabalipuram on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Igor Makarov (55), who was part of a Russian delegation.
According to police sources, Makarov had gone for a swim near Mahabalipuram Beach with a friend on Tuesday.
"While the friend stayed on shore, Makarov went for a swim. But he went missing after sometimes and his friend had screamed for help," the police said.
Fishermen's hunt for Makarov proved in vain. "As the Russian had worn a life jacket he was washed ashore after some time," the police added. He was rushed to a hospital on the East Coast Road, where he was declared brought dead.
