Students to get hands-on training in mapping skills

The students will be taught about the geographic coordinates, timeline, latitude and longitude and different geographical zones.

Chennai: With an aim to improve the basic understanding of the globe, the Rashtriya Madhymik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) plans to train the government school students in mapping skills from next academic year. The students will be taught about the geographic coordinates, timeline, latitude and longitude and different geographical zones.

"Currently, the students are not aware of their geographic location. This training will enable them to know their location and understand the environment geographically," RMSA officials said. "The project will be implemented in the select 10 schools in each district on the pilot basis. Based on the results of the pilot study it will be extended to all the schools," they added.

Ministry of Human Resource Development has given the plan approval for the training programme. "Through mapping skills training the students themselves will know how the people living in Kanyakumari and Delhi are experiencing different weather conditions due to their geographical locations and they will also understand the time difference better," the official said.

The RMSA plans to tie up with higher education institutions like University of Madras, Madurai Kamaraj University and Presidency College for utilising their labs for providing hands-on training to the students.

MHRD also approved the proposal to increase martial arts training to girl students studying in educationally backward districts. Girl students will be trained in Karate, Judo and Kungfu, depending on the availability of experts in that locality. The self-defence training will be conducted during July to September.

This training programme is expected to improve the confidence of the girl students.
