Activists seek blanket ban on fireworks across Kerala

They said that as many as 20,000 kg of gun power is used during Thrissur Pooram by each of the participants Paramekkavu.

THRISSUR: The anti-firework activists here has asked the state government for a blanket ban on fireworks across the state for three months including the one held during Thrissur Pooram in view of the tragedy in Kollam on Sunday morning.

In the Thrissur and Palakkad districts all the major poorams having fireworks like Nenmara Vela, Uthralikkavu Pooram, Kuttiyangavu and Anthimahakalankkavu is over and the only major event remaining this season is Thirssur Pooram.

They said that as many as 20,000 kg of gun power is used during Thrissur Pooram by each of the participants Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi and the safety distance of 100 meters from the blasting ground is not strictly followed during Thrissur pooram as mentioned in the display licence issued by the district collectors for every firework.

The functionaries of Heritage Animal Task Force based here has forwarded a petition to the Chief Secretary and Home secretary on Sunday morning along with the standing order of Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) issued on 08.12.2009 that has laid out specific guidelines like testing the materials used for fireworks in authorized labs in Tamil Nadu, which is never followed in Kerala.

“The fireworks do not have any mention in the list of temple rituals or belief. It is used only for raising funds for the organising committee and for sheer entertainment,” they said.
