Rarest carotid artery bypass performed on 69-year-old woman in Guntur

Vijayawada: Ramesh Hospitals, Guntur, has successfully performed the rarest carotid artery bypass surgery, hospital’s chief cardiologist Dr. Pothineni Ramesh Babu announced here on Saturday.

Providing details, he said Vasireddy Sujatha, a 69-year-old woman from Guntur, had been talking to her family members after a meal. Suddenly, she fell from the chair and lost consciousness. Immediately, her family members rushed her to Ramesh Hospitals, where they carried out a carotid doppler test, MRI brain angio and CT brain and neck angio. Reports confirmed that more than 90 percent of the left brain artery had got blocked.

Dr. Ramesh Babu said usually, in such cases, angioplasty is preferred. But owing to complications, senior cardiologists Dr. Haritha, and Dr. Rama Rao, senior cardio thoracic surgeon Dr. Jayaram Pai, chief neurologist Major General (Retd.) Dr. Kumar Velu and senior anesthesiologist Dr. Bikas Sahu chose to do a carotid artery bypass grafting surgery.

Bypass is usually performed for blood vessels that go to heart. It is rarely performed on critical blood vessels leading to the brain, Dr. Pai informed.

With the surgery being successful, the hospital discharged the patient on the third day itself.

Dr. Ramesh Babu congratulated the medical team for diagnosing the disease and successfully performing the rare and highly complex carotid artery bypass grafting surgery.
