Chennai: Residents in trouble as wall becomes hindrance

With a ration shop only on one side of the area, residents of the other side would cross the tracks to get provisions previously.

Chennai: In a bid to increase the safety and stop jaywalking on tracks at Thirumullaivoyal railway station, workmen have recently started building a compound wall on either side of the station. But this raised a new issue.

With a ration shop only on one side of the area, residents of the other side would cross the tracks to get provisions previously. But now, as there is no foot over bridge and there is no scope to jump over the compound wall, the residents on the other side of the station are in a fix.

“Over 2000 residents of Periyar Nagar, Sathya Nagar and New Anna Nagar have been crossing the tracks to get provisions and now, they either have to travel over 2 kilometres and use Annanur railway gate to go to the other side or visit the ration shop on Thiruverkadu main road, which is even far” said Kavitha Thirumugam, a resident of the area, adding that autos charge at least '100 to go to any of the shops.

In regard to this, she has also filed a complaint about two years ago. The Avadi office contacted her to know if there was any land in the area to start a ration shop and when the residents refused, they had been promising to find a solution, but nothing has been done till date.

The compound wall has added to their woes. Railway authorities, however, said the number of deaths of the residents crossing the tracks in the morning to get the provisions, was alarming and only the civil supplies department has to take a measure to resolve the issue.
