Sewage mukt Bellandur by 2020: Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board
Bengaluru: In order to make Bellandur Lake sewage free by 2020, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has planned many Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at various places.
While STPs with a capacity of 60MLD and 90MLD have already been established at the upstream of the lake and the
board has started the construction of 150MLD capacity of STP at Koramangala and Challaghatta (K&C) valley.
BWSSB Chief Engineer K.R. Manjunath said, “The entire project is of state government. We have plans to make Bellandur Lake sewage free by 2020. It cannot be instantaneous, but the plans are already set in.”
At Sarakki, Hulimavu and Agara STPs will come up with 55 MLD capacities as the BWSSB wants to treat the sewage before it enters the lake.
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued notices to 99 apartments in the vicinity of Bellandur lake for not having STPs and UGD connection, without which the sewage gets directly discharged into Bellandur and Varthur lakes.
Manjunath said that the sewage from city market and other parts of the city enters Koramangala for which a pump house of 80MLD capacity has been proposed at NGV complex in Koramangala.
“The sewage which enters Koramangala will be pumped to the STP at K&C valley, so that it is treated before it enters the lake. This project will start in 2019 and get over by 2020,” the chief engineer added.
On being asked how the fund aided by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would be utilised, Manjunath said it will be used in getting 775 MLD of Cauvery water to the city and in setting up 14 STP in 110 villages.
