Plan to plug PDS loopholes

Civil Supplies officials to check samples of PDS grains.

Thrissur: The civil supplies department in Thrissur taluk has decided to keep the samples of foodgrain to be distributed to the beneficiaries at the offices of civic bodies as well. This is to check the practice of routing quality foodgrain in the public distribution system to private godowns and replacing them with sub-standard stuff in ration shops.

All the samples of different varieties of rice and wheat reaching the ration shops from the wholesale civil supplies godowns will be collected from the godowns by civil supplies inspectors for display at the corporation office, zonal offices, block and grama panchayt offices.

Boards will also be displayed about the quantity of the foodgrain supplied during each month for different categories of cards at these offices.

"Though the samples are presently exhibited at the ration shops, the sample can be tampered with. From now on, If there is mismatch in quantity and quality of grain displayed at offices of the civic bodies and provided at the ration shops, the public can bring it to the notice of their representatives at the civic bodies or they can write it down on the complaint book that needs to be kept in all ration shops," Thrissur taluk supply officer P.R. Jayachandran said. Complaints can also be filed about mismatch in quantity and quality of the grain by calling 0487- 2331031 and 9747206207.
