Hand grenade found near temple in Kanchi

The Cheyyur police rushed to the spot and retrieved the grenade with the help of bomb squad that has been brought from Kancheepuram.

Chennai: Residents of Cheyyur in Kancheepuram district woke up to intimidating news of hand grenade found near a temple on Saturday.

According to the police, a boy from Palaiyur village near Cheyyur found the grenade in paddy fields near Selliamman Temple, Palaiyur. Frightened to witness a live grenade, the boy had rushed to the village and informed other residents, the police added.

The Cheyyur police rushed to the spot and retrieved the grenade with the help of bomb squad that has been brought from Kancheepuram. Subsequently, the bomb squad defused the grenade and buried in an abandoned quarry, near the village.

The incident, which occurred a few days after the Chennai police had arrested over 70 gangsters at a birthday party near Poonamallee, has created panic among the residents.

The police also suspect that the gangsters escaped during 'gate-crashing operation' have found hideouts in the locality.

Meanwhile, the Cheyyur police have registered a case and investigating to determine how and why the grenade had ended up in Palaiyur village.

In the meantime, residents of the village have raised apprehensions over the possible hiding of gangsters, who have escaped police operation at Poonamallee.
