Chennai-based NGT gives Telangana more time on Palamuru-1

Sanjay Upadhya alleged that the Tiger Reserve is now at the edge of being destroyed.

Hyderabad: The Chennai-based National Green Tribunal (South Zone) on Friday granted a week’s time to the Telangana government to explain its stand on an application challenging the action of the government in going ahead with the first phase of Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Project which passes through Amrabad- Srisailam-Nagarjunasagar Tiger Reserve without forest or environmental clearances by clearing about 279 hectares of forest land.

Mr. Sanjay Upadhya, counsel appearing for the petitioner, alleged that the Tiger Reserve is now at the edge of being destroyed owing to the blatant illegal constructions around the buffer zone of the Tiger Reserve.

He said that the state government in order to envisage its massive lift irrigation scheme has been blatantly ignoring all the environment laws and requisite statutory compliances.
