GHMC green curtain to transform appearance
Hyderabad: Want your walls to have a green curtain? Taking a leaf from China, and under the project of green buffers along the traffic corridors, GHMC plans to cover the city’s major compound walls, central medians and traffic islands with green curtains by way of avenue plantation as is being done by the red nation. The green curtain will be done on compound walls of houses located at junctions or main roads, not around homes located in colonies.
GHMC urban biodiversity director V. Damodar said, “We have already placed 2.06 lakh plants on the main roads and in the compounds of educational institutions and central and state government offices. Over 80 per cent of the plants are surviving. The urban biodiversity wings intend to target 50 lakh plantations in 2017. Interested parties much contact the GHMC urban biodiversity wing, along with an identification card and the address. Houses located on the main roads and are put to carbon monoxide pollution may apply. Commercial establishments, too, can approach the corporation.”
The officer added, “GHMC will be responsible for the plantation but maintenance should be done by those who get to have these plants in their compounds. Creepers are preferred on compound and flyover walls, as they are evergreen and shade tolerant.” Avenue plantation was done during the bio diversity event in 2014, where city bridges were covered with creepers. Also, the Hyderabad Metro Rail has taken up a green corridor of 70km along phase one via duct. This is done to reduce re-suspension of road dust and other emissions.
