Be more careful while negotiating busy junctions.

Kochi: Be more careful while negotiating busy junctions like Atlantis, Cheranelloor, Palarivattom and Vytilla for they are all among the “black spots” identified by the Kochi traffic police.

With the rapid rise in vehicles, especially two wheelers, the number of accidents and deaths too has increased. The Cheranelloor Jn-Amritha Hospital stretch is the most dangerous under the East traffic police station with 41 accidents being reported in 2015, followed by Chalikkavattom-Chakkaraparambu (37), Palarivattom Bypass-EMC Hospital (32), Vytilla Junction (30) Kundanoor (30) and Edapally Bypass (28).

Similarly under the West traffic police, the most accidents happened on the Palluruthy Veli-Kacheripady stretch in Edakochi (28) followed by Thevara PS-Thevara Bridge (17) and Atlantis Jn (13).

“We’ve implemented a speed restriction of 35 kph at the Venduruthy Vikrant Bridge as a safety measure, and more steps are underway,” said a senior officer.
While 2,257 mishaps were recorded in 2014 (1,431 in East and 826 in West), it went up to 2561 in 2015 (1,661 in East and 899 in West). The mishap-related deaths too increased with the year 2015 recording 168 fatalities compared to 136 the previous year.

Drive to catch speeding bikes

The City Police will launch a week-long special drive against speeding bikes from Thursday. “It has come to our notice that over-speeding by youths using the new generation bikes are resulting in rise in accidents. “The drive will nab those who race through the roads, modify silencers or bike parts or over-speeding,” a statement said.
