HIV infection in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh gays highest
Hyderabad: Prevalence of HIV among gays in AP and TS is the highest at 10.1 per cent, according to the surveillance report 2014-15 released by the National Aids Control Organisation. A senior officer in Telangana Aids Control Society said, the average age of gays was found to be between 24 and 30 years. “They were not willing to come forward for testing as they were afraid of Section 377 (which criminalises gay sex),” he said. “We want to use the same method that we did with female sex workers, where police personnel were counselled to not book them.”
A senior officer in the AP Aids Control Society said the most active group, in the age group of 18 to 20 years, was not following the right prevention methods nor approaching health care centres for help if they were infected.
