Water disputes: Pro-Kannada outfits plan bandh on January 27

Call for PM's intervention to resolve Mahadayi, Mekedatu issues.

BENGALURU: To highlight a number of issues including Mahadayi water dispute and Mekedatu project, Kannada Okkoota, an umbrella of pro-Kannada organisations led by Mr Vatal Nagaraj, has called for a dawn to dusk state bandh on January 27.

Nagaraj told Deccan Chronicle, "We have been fighting for years for the issue of Mahadayi and also Kalasa Banduri. But elected representatives have failed to raise the issue in the parliament."

This apart, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who should have written to his Karnataka counterpart Mr Siddaramaiah to resolve the issue between two states, is having correspondence with BJP state president B.S. Yeddyurappa. And Mr Yeddyurappa has not kept his promise of resolving the issue. It is being treated in a childish manner, he observed.

He also vented his anger over the lethargic attitude of state politicians towards the multi-crore drinking and power project 'Mekedatu'.

Many pro-Kannada outfits, including Kannada Film Chamber, have already declared their support and we have appealed to others trade and transport organisations to support the cause and the bandh, Nagaraj said. He sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to amicably settle the issue.

The Prime Minister is expected to visit the city on January 28. We appeal through media to take steps to resolve the issue, he urged and added that if appropriate measures are taken to resolve the issue, the bandh would be called off.

A protest march will be held by from Town Hall to Freedom Park on the day of bandh. He also warned that he will not keep quiet and fight any injustice to the state, be it Mahadayi or Cauvery.
