Old-age home demolished in Erode

Move follows complaint of land encroachment, ill-treatment of inmates.

Erode: A private old age home, which was constructed by encroaching lands of railway and public works department near Erode, was demolished on Wednesday. The old age home ‘Anbu Illam’ was functioning at Chinniampalayam in Modakurichi area in Erode district on encroached land for the last 25 years and 78 inmates were accommodated in the home recently.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday a team of officials led by highways assistant engineer Natarajan and social welfare officer Ambika began demolishing the building in the presence of police.

Before beginning the demolition, inmates we-re shifted to Erode government hospital by ambulance and they were sent to various nearby homes after medical test. The officials had conducted a surprise check following complaints about ill treatment of in mates and harassment. Following an inquiry, officials ordered for closure of home immediately. However, the issue was brought to court by the proprietor of home Sheik Amanulla.

However, officials got a court order for closure following legal process and the building was demolished by engaging earth-movers.
