Curfew clamped in Assam town

On Wednesday morning, hundreds took out a protest march on National Highway 15 demanding action against the police officers.

Guwahati: One person was killed in police firing and several others, including a 14-year-old girl, were injured on Wednesday when the locals at an Assam town, protesting the custodial death of a daily wage labourer, clashed with the police. Fearing backlash and fresh violence the state administration has clamped curfew in Dhula town of Darrang district where the incident took place.

The problem started following the alleged custodial death of one Hasen Ali, a Bengali-speaking Muslim who worked as a labourer in Karnataka.

The locals alleged that he died due to atrocities by the police. The authorities have placed the officer-in-charge of Dhula police station, Ranjit Hazarika, under suspension.

The police, on Tuesday evening, had raided Ali’s house suspecting he was in possession of an illegal weapon, but could not find any. Sources said, after Ali was picked up by the police he fell sick and died soon afterwards at a hospital.
