Bengaluru: Pourkarmikas protest, seek security from contractors
BENGALURU: In the backdrop of the flash strike called by garbage contractors twice last year and again with reports that they may go on strike on Thursday, pourakarmikas on Wednesday gathered in front of BBMP Head office and registered their protest.
Maitri Krishnan of the BBMP Contract Pourakarmikas affiliated to AICCTU said, "The protest called by the contract mafia is dubbed as the protest against the service tax issue. But that is not the case. With direct cash transfer being implemented, they fear that the pourakarmikas will no more remain under them."
Pourakarmikas are not in support of such flash protests. But with intimidation from the contract mafia, they fear that they might get attacked if they come to work on Thursday, Ms Maitri said.
They met BBMP Mayor Sampath Raj, who assured them of adequate security for pourkarmikas to perform their work without any intimidation from the contractors. He directed BBMP officials to ensure that no threats, harassment, intimidation are caused to any of the pourakarmikas.
