Telangana Polls: Sec 144 to be imposed on day of votes counting

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar IPS in Sunday issued prohibitory orders for the counting of votes of the December 7 elections at 15 counting centres in the twin cities.

Mr Kumar said in a press release that the prohibitory orders were in place to maintain public order, peace and tranquillity. Any person violating the orders will be liable for prosecution.

The following personnel were exempt from the order: Police officers, military or paramilitary personnel, Home Guards, and election officers on duty.

The orders prohibit assembly of five or more persons and any kind of procession and carrying of sticks either with or without flags, lathis, fire arms, or anything which can be used as weapons. The orders are enforced within a one-km radius of the counting centres.

The order also prohibits erection of temporary structures like shamianas, pandals and khannath on thoroughfares, public places and areas where the people may throng. The use of mikes and public address system, music, singing or speeches or broadcasting through speakers was barred.

The order banned carrying of stones and other means of casting missiles, making a speech, gesture or mimetic representation, exhibition or dissemination of pictures, symbols, placards or any other thing which could create religious animosity or hatred between different communities or individuals.

The orders will be in force with effect from 6 am of December 11 to 6 am of December 12.
