Protection ordered for newlywed couple

Justice M.S.Ramesh gave the directive while passing interim orders on a petition filed by Murugavel, an advocate and Saranya of Vaanur Taluk.

Chennai: The Madras high court directed the Additional Superintendent of Police, Moovendhar Nagar in Villupuram to provide police protection to a newly wedded couple, who got married without the consent of the bride's family and apprehended danger to their lives. Justice M.S.Ramesh gave the directive while passing interim orders on a petition filed by Murugavel, an advocate and Saranya of Vaanur Taluk.

Ordering notice to the Sub-Inspectors attached to the Kottakuppam police station, the bride's father and his close relatives and alleged henchmen, the judge posted to December 19, further hearing.

Petitioners' counsel P.T.Perumal submitted that the petitioners fell in love and got married at a wedding hall in Thiruvanthipuram in Cuddalore district with the blessings of their friends on September 18. They then returned to their respective parental homes. The father of the bride, however, came to know about the marriage on October 29 and since then he had been torturing the bride.

Complaints and counter complaints were lodged by both parties. However, the police, from Superintendent of Police down to Sub-Inspectors, were taking sides with the bride's family and attempted to brainwash her. The bride somehow managed to escape from her family and returned to her husband's house on November 11. Since the threats continued and the police did not take any action on their complaints and acted hand in glove with the bride's family, they filed the present petition, he added.
