Chennai: One person died and at least seven sustained injuries as their bus rammed into a truck on GST Road in the wee hours of Friday.

The accident took place around 3 am, when a private omni bus headed to Chennai from Tiruchy, rammed a water tanker near the Chengalpattu tollgate on GST Road.

The bus conductor, identified as Sudhakar (38) of Kancheepuram, died on the spot.

The driver and six other passengers who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the Chengalpattu government hospital. The truck driver fled the spot.

Police claimed that the tanker driver had abruptly stopped his vehicle, which the bus driver did not anticipate, resulting in the crash. Chengalpattu taluk police collected CCTV footages from the tollgate and have launched a search for the truck driver.

“A case will be registered on the truck driver for rash and negligent driving under sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused has managed to flee, but will soon be arrested,” said a police officer.
