Centre delists thermal power unit, a blow to Telangana

The supercritical technology boilers are more eco-friendly compared to subcritical technology.

Hyderabad: In a setback to Telangana state power sector, the Union ministry of environment and forestry has delisted the 4x270 MW thermal power plant, popularly known as Bhadradri Plant, proposed to come up at Manuguru.

The MoEF said that as per the only supercritical technology — i.e. at least 600 MW or 800 MW for each unit — is being considered as per the 13th Plan and Manuguru plant is 270 MW each.

The supercritical technology boilers are more eco-friendly compared to subcritical technology. The MoEF cannot consider TSGenco’s request seeking environmental clearance for the project, the MoEF stated on its website.

TSGenco has already invested about Rs 1,500 crore in the project in the form of payments to BHEL which is executing the project. TSGenco said that the project has not been rejected but delisted.

“We are confident of getting approval because the plant was proposed to be completed before March 31, 2017, under the 12th Plan itself which allows subcritical technology. The project has been delayed because of a case at the National Green Tribunal,” said TSGenco chairman D. Prabhakar Rao.
