HC questions Telangana govt on quota to doctors posted in interiors

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court directed the state government to submit its stand on whether, under GO Ms. No. 155, doctors working under Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) and insurance medical services department were eligible for the in-service quota in PG medical admissions.

On Monday, the division bench, comprising Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili and Justice Namavarapu Rajeswara Rao directed the Advocate General to appear in court on Wednesday to clarify the government's position.

The bench was dealing with a petition by some doctors working under TVVP, complaining that the Kaloji Narayana Rao Medical and Health University was denying them admissions into PG medical courses under the competent authority quota despite meeting all eligibility standards and passing the NEET-PG.
In an earlier hearing, the university's standing counsel contended that under the GO, TVVP, and IMS department, doctors are only qualified for service quota if they put in six years of service regardless of their location.

Sama Sandeep Reddy, counsel for the petitioners, said there was a specific provision to grant reservation for in-service physicians in PG medical admissions. The interpretation of the varsity was nonsensical since one cannot compare the service provided by a doctor in a tribal or rural region to that in a metropolitan area.
