Heavy rains batter Anantapur

It was the highest rainfall in last eight decades.

Anantapur: Anantapur city witnessed record rainfall of 10.4 cm since Sunday night, the highest recorded in eight decades. The next highest mark was about 8 cm a decade ago. The rainfall inundated almost the entire city.

People of APHB Colony, Jesus Nagar and HLC colony had a sleepless night after up up to seven feet of water rain water entered the houses and rose to a height of five to seven feet. Hundreds of motorcycles and cars were damaged.

Hundreds of shops were submerged and traders at the RTC bus stand, Tapovanam, Nadimivanka and Maruva Vanka suffered huge damage.

Anantapur Urban MLA V. Prabhakar Chowdary said the rain and inundation had created fear among the residents as several areas including main bazaars of the corporation appeared like tanks. Civic authorities estimated massive damage of roads.

Ms Bharathi Bai, a resident of APHB Colony, said electronic gadgets were damaged and essentials washed away in the water that entered her house.
