Pampore militants came on boats from Jhelum: report

A soldier was injured in the gunbattle that broke out between security forces and terrorists in Pampore.

Srinagar: Security forces are battling a group of terrorists who are holed up inside a government building in Pampore, which is just 15 km from Srinagar. A soldier has been injured in the cross-fire and the building has also suffered damages.

Two to three militants are believed to have entered into the building of Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) at around 6.30 am on Monday.

According to a report in NDTV, the terrorists used boats to cross the River Jhelum, which flows from Kashmir into Pakistan. The terrorists reached the EDI building and set it on fire to draw the attention of security forces.

As soon as forces reached the spot, a gunbattle broke out and one soldier was injured. "One soldier has been injured in the exchange of fire with militants holed up inside the building at Pampore," a defence spokesman said.

Shots and explosions kept ringing through the building and the gunbattle is still on. The defence spokeman said further details were awaited as the operation was in progress to flush out the militants.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot, but they were not allowed to enter the building due to security reasons, the official said.

Militants had targeted the EDI building in February this year as well.

Two soldiers, including an officer, a civilian employee of the Institute and three militants were killed in that operation that lasted 48 hours.
