Udupi: A man, who allegedly gave a triple talaq to his wife, has been arrested by Kundapur police. This is said to be the first case in the district under the newly passed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

Alfia Akhtar (27) of Gopadi village in Kundapur Taluk married Haneef Sayyed of Hiriyadka on July 4, 2019 at Jumma Masjid in Moodu Gopady. Prior to the wedding, Haneef and his family members Sayyed Abbas, Jaituna and Ayesha had demanded `5 lakh as dowry and Alifa’s family agreed to pay Rs 2 lakh. Three days after the marriage, Haneef and his family members started torturing Alifa for more money. They not only abused her, but also physically tortured her by banging her head against the wall.

On August 15 midnight, Haneef allegedly gave the triple talaq. Ayesha returned to her parents' house on August 17 after Haneef allegedly threatened to kill her if she came back to his house.

Haneef was arrested and sent to judicial custody, the police said.
