Tiruchy: Roll back property tax hike, urge residents

TIRUCHY: Tension prevailed for a while when members of various organisations including residents welfare associations quarreled with the police when the later prevented the agitators to enter into the municipal corporation office premises at Tiruchy on Monday.

According to the agitators, they wanted to submit a petition to the corporation commissioner, appealing to him to reduce the abnormal hike in house tax but the police prevented them.

Following the continuing protest against the police action, the cops allowed a small group of protesters to present their memorandums to the corporation officials and disburse peacefully.

Meanwhile, a group of women residents laid siege to the state local administration minister S.P. Velumani when the minister went to inaugurate a park as part of smart city project at Periyaar Nagar in K.K.Nagar area here, demanding to renovate the road network and improve drinking water supply in that area.

A section of women residents of suburb Poolangkulathupatti and its surrounding areas laid siege to the Tiruchy collectorate with empty pots on Monday to protest against the acute shortage of drinking water in their area.

Later they presented a petition to Ms. Shanthi, district revenue officer, Tiruchy, who presided over the weekly grievances day meeting. She assured the agitators to do the needful.
