Stuck in flood, no water to drink in Andhra Pradesh villages

Officials are supplying packed drinking water only to those who have gone to the shelters set up by the government.

Kakinada: People living in the villages affected by floods in the two Godavari districts are facing a severe drinking water scarcity and are drinking river water after cleaning it with indiga kaya which is believed to purify muddy water.

Officials are supplying packed drinking water only to those who have gone to the shelters set up by the government.

Mr M. Narasimha Murthy of Pudipalli of Devipatnam mandal in East Godavari said that previously, when floods occurred, rural water supply officials used to supply water packets before the floods and for 10 days afterwards. That is not being done now.

However, Rampacho-davaram RDO B. Sri-nivasa Rao said 20,000 drinking water packets had supplied and another 15,000 would be supplied on Tuesday.

As many as 125 villages in East and West Godavari districts are encircled by Godavari flood waters on Monday. The water level touched 15.20 feet at Dowlaiswaram and officials discharged 13.50 lakh cusecs.
