Chennai: Madras High Court Chief Justice Vijaya K. Tahilramani, who has tendered her resignation in protest against transfer to the much-smaller Meghalaya High Court, did not attend the court on Monday.

State Law Minister C.V. Shanmugam met the Chief Justice at her official residence in the morning, triggering speculation and excitement in the legal circles.

The CJ had sent her resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind, with copy to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi last Friday (Sept 6) when the Supreme Court collegium turned down her request to reconsider the transfer decision.

A judge need not wait for the resignation to be accepted and can stay away from the court, according to legal experts.

Meanwhile, a group of lawyers demonstrated outside the court premises protesting against the CJ’s transfer. The Madras high court advocates association has announced boycott of court proceedings on Tuesday.
