BMRCL cracks whip, collects Rs 30 as fee for excess luggage

The cops paste a sticker on the luggage to indicate that it is excess, and the counter staff later collect the excess baggage fee.

Bengaluru: As there was confusion among commuters over carrying luggage on Metro trains, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has asked security staff at the entrance of stations to take a decision on excess baggage at the time of scanning the bags. The cops paste a sticker on the luggage to indicate that it is excess, and the counter staff later collect the excess baggage fee.

Last month, BMRCL issued 9,816 luggage tickets across its 40 Metro stations. It is more than double the number of tickets issued four months ago. Also, it has helped BMRCL earn Rs 2,94,480, which is the highest baggage fee. Any baggage that weighs more than 15 kg or exceeds 60 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm in dimension is charged `30 per piece.

A BMRCL official told Deccan Chronicle, "The rule was introduced many days ago, but the implementation was not proper. We started implementing it seriously recently by launching the concept of luggage stickers. Every commuter with extra luggage should purchase a ticket of `30."

A ticket costing `30 needs to be purchased by a commuter from a cubicle that takes care of excess fare collection near the Automatic Fare Collection gates, he said. In April, BMRCL earned `1,44,870 by issuing 4,829 luggage tickets.
