Swaraj Abhiyan to campaign against 'illegal' hookah bars in Delhi

Liquor and hookah are still being served in numerous bars in Rajouri Garden.

New Delhi: Swaraj Abhiyan, which led a campaign against the "proliferation" of liquor vends in the city, has now set its eyes on "illegal" hookah bars, which it alleged the ruling AAP has turned a blind eye to.

The Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan-led forum, keen to emerge as a viable alternative to AAP in Delhi, has organized a public hearing on September 25 in Rajouri Garden, where a local bar allegedly publicised an event after the name of a Sikh spiritual leader.

"Deeply disturbed at the growing number of such bars, concerned citizens approached the government functionaries and public representatives with their problems, but to no avail.

Liquor and hookah are still being served in numerous bars in Rajouri Garden.

"Even after repeated representations from local residents, Jarnail Singh, the MLA from Rajouri Garden, an area dominated by Sikh population, has not taken any action to address the menace in his constituency," Abhiyan said in a statement.

Earlier, Swaraj Abhiyan had accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of giving sanction to open 399 liquor outlets in the national capital over the last one year.
