Donations pour in for Odisha man
BHUBANESWAR: Donations pour in for Dana Majhi, a resident of Melaghara village in Odisha who on August 24 carried the body of his wife on his shoulders. He was allegedly denied a mortuary van by a government hospital at Bhawanipatna.
Dana, who reportedly does not know how to count money beyond a few thousand rupees, has received nearly Rs 10 lakh in his Utkal Gramya Bank account from various individuals and organisations. The district collector, Brunda D, has entrusted a special officer to maintain the account and ensure that the money was utilised properly for the education and his children.
Reports said leading non-governmental organisation (NGO) Sulabh International has handed over a fixed deposit receipt of Rs 5 lakh to Dana. Besides, it has committed to give Rs 10,000 every month to his eldest daughter Sandini for her education. Sandini will avail the monthly benefit till she gets a job or gets married. Two generous people from Gujarat have given Dana Rs 1 lakh each while one Jitendra Mishra, a non-resident Indian living in the US has donated Rs 1.05 lakh.
A Maharashtra-based NGO has donated Rs 80,000 and given four fixed deposit receipts of Rs 10,000 each in the name of Dana’s three daughters. No information was available on how much money the Bahrain Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has donated to Dana. Moved by the harrowing story Dana which was flashed widely in national and international media, a number of individuals and organisations have come forward to help him.
