Water problems persist despite rains in Vizag
Visakhapatnam: Despite having rainfall for a few days, groundwater levels have not increased much in the city. The civic officials have failed to take measures in improving the groundwater levels. The residents of several areas are still facing severe water problems even in the rainy season.
Water scarcity is seen in areas such as Marikavalasa, PM Palem, Arilova Colony, Ravindra Nagar, Old Dairy Farm and Seethammapeta. As municipal water supply is not sufficient, the residents are depending on borewells. Some of them have opted to dig the borewells deeper.
Though the actual rainfall is above normal in the city during this month, the water levels in reservoirs have not increased to satisfactory levels. GVMC superintending engineer (water supply) G.V. Pallam Raju said that the water consumption of the city was more than the groundwater recharge.
He said, “Gostani river, Mudasarlova and Gambheeram reservoirs continue to remain dry. Almost 60 per cent of the city gets water from Yeleswaram reservoir. We are still pumping Godavari water through Purushottapatnam Lift Scheme into it. With this, the reservoir has improved from 60 to 80 metres in August.”
“The water levels in other reservoirs have marginally increased after the rains.” he said on a positive note.
