Hassan: Heavy landslides brought an entire hill down on NH 75 in the Shiradi Ghat section, destroying a house in its path Friday afternoon. No one was hurt, however,  as the occupants of the house, which came crashing down in the rain, had vacated it fearing a disaster.

The occupants of  two other houses located close to the spot were evacuated by the authorities for their safety. All traffic came to a halt on the ghat road  in Donigal, Sakleshpur taluk, as the landslide made safe passage impossible
People of Sakleshpur town remained anxious as the water level of the River Hemavathy flowing close to it, continued to rise on Friday, flooding Azad Road, Meen  Market and surrounding areas.

"The water, which was 2 ft high in these areas is now 4ft high," said Sakleshpur tahsildhar, Rakshith, revealing that relief centres had been opened in Sakleshpur. Around a 100 people had found shelter in one already and were being provided food, he added.

Meanwhile, the Bisile Ghat road, leading to the pilgrimage centre of Kukke Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada, has also been damaged in the rain and is not fit for traffic, according to Hassan Superintendent of Police, Prakash Gowda.

And landslides continued to disrupt rail services via Hassan to Mangaluru on Friday. With as many as 10 landslides reported on the Sakleshpur-Subramanya station road , the authorities found it hard to clear the debris as  heavy rain continued to lash the Western Ghats.
