Bengaluru: 18 injured as bus hits divider

The ill-fated KSRTC bus attached to Channapattana depot was going to Kollegal from Bengaluru.

BENGALURU: As many as 18 passengers had a miraculous escape when a KSRTC bus they were travelling had hit the road divider and jumped many feet high in the air before hitting the metro pillar on the Mysuru Road and overturned on Friday morning.

The ill-fated KSRTC bus attached to Channapattana depot was going to Kollegal from Bengaluru. A three-and-half-year old child’s hand got severed in the incident. Six women and two men also suffered minor injuries.

Dia was traveling to Kollegal with her parents Poornima and Rajendra Prasad. She lost her left elbow in the accident. She was rushed to Rajarajeshwari hospital, along with severed hand, and later shifted to Bhagvan Mahaveer Jain hospital. The traffic was regulated to shift her to Jain hospital. The doctors performed a surgery on the child, but it is yet to be known that if Dia will be able to use her hand.

The incident took place at 8.30 am near Jnanabharathi bus stop located close to Nexa showroom and the driver, Srinivas, was reportedly speeding. While overtaking another vehicle he lost control and the bus collided with the road divider.

According to Kamakshipalya Traffic police, the impact was such that the bus jumped about 12 feet high and hit a Metro pillar.

Fortunately, there was not much traffic at the time of accident. Mysore road normally sees heavy vehicular movement.

After the incident, DCP Traffic West Sowmyalatha rushed to the spot. KSRTC officers also came and facilitated the process of treatment. They also shifted the bus to clear the traffic flow.

Divisional Technical Engineer Srinath said, “The treatment cost will be provided to the injured. They will be eligible to Rs 2 lakh compensation that KSRTC insures for passengers,” he stated.

Sources said that ever since KSRTC did away with the practice of installing speed governors in buses, the number of accidents due to rash driving has increased.

Kamakshipalya traffic police have slapped a case on KSRTC bus driver Srinivas. They are awaiting the report from Regional Traffic Office (RTO) to ascertain the exact cause of accident.
