BBMP gears up to face deluge in Bengaluru

Heavy rain predicted over city for next two days.

BENGALURU: While the Northern and coastal Karnataka is recovering from flood fury, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Cell (KSNDMC) has issued a red alert to BBMP cautioning about the heavy rains in the next two days.

Following the alert, Mayor Gangambike held a meeting and directed officials to take necessary measures and to be alert round the clock especially at the flood prone areas. She also said that sensors have been installed to check the water level in drains.

The sensors have been installed at the 18 critical points by the KSNDMC. Each device costs Rs 35,000 and helps check the water level by sitting at the KSNDMC control room, she explains.

Gangambike said that she has appraised Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa and he has assured necessary support to the BBMP. He has also been appraised about the measures taken by the BBMP to tackle the situation in the event of flooding.

She said that about 182 sensitive or flood prone points have been identified. Of these 18 are critical as they get flooded for rainfall above 120 mm.

Control rooms
The BBMP has set up permanent control rooms at nine locations. Already, 63 control rooms have been set up and they are equipped with necessary paraphernalia to tackle emergencies.

Tree removal
About 28 teams have been formed to remove the fallen trees and branches. Each team will comprise seven members and a supervisor.

Trash barriers
Trash barriers have been installed at five drains. These barriers help BBMP clear the garbage and prevent flooding.
