Telangana state government asserts power to check rummy

The bench was dealing with a batch of petitions by Junglee Games India Pvt Ltd.

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government on Thursday contended before the Hyderabad High Court that it has the power to either regularise or prohibit playing rummy by treating it as an offence either on offline or online.

Senior counsel of the Supreme Court Harin Ravel, appearing for the state government before a division bench contended that the prohibiting rummy was a policy decision and the court cannot intervene into the policy matters of the government .

The bench was dealing with a batch of petitions by Junglee Games India Pvt Ltd, Play Games 24x7 Pvt Ltd and Head Infotech (India) Pvt Ltd from Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad challenging an Ordinance issued by the state government bringing ‘Online Rummy’ under the Gaming Act by amending the provisions of Telangana Gaming Act, 1974.
