After St Thomas Mount mishap, work to move railway tracks begins

On the day of the incident, the train was sent on platform number 4, which is usually only used for express trains.

Chennai: Following the death of seven youngsters at the St Thomas Mount mishap on July 24, authorities have begun working on moving the railway tracks.

This comes after passengers demanded the breaking down of the cement barricade which was the cause of the accident which caused the death of seven people on the Chennai beach to Tirumalpur via Tambaram train.

Railway Safety Chief Commissioner Manoharan had visited platform number 4 along with the Deputy Chief Commissioner on July 30, after which an open inquiry was initiated at the Divisional Regional Manager’s office in Chennai Central.

On the day of the incident, the train was sent on platform number 4, which is usually only used for express trains. Now, the first step in averting danger at the platform has begun. Stones on the railway line have been removed from the tracks by platform 4 so that the tracks can be moved three feet away from the cement barricade, say officials. “This is because it is not possible to remove the barricade. If we do so, people will start climbing over it. Instead, we will move the tracks,” said an official.

The track on that platform, which is in a curved manner, will also be laid straight. The fast trains which remain cancelled will only resume functioning after these measures are in place, ensured the official.
