Viral fever cases on the rise in Hyderabad

Certain viruses are self-limiting in nature, but they are also strongly contagious, leading to all members getting affected.

Hyderabad: Around 50 cases of viral fever have been recorded in the Fever Hospital. In some cases, all the members of a family have been affected, showing that the virus is contagious.

Dr Ram Prasad, senior general physician, says, “Movement of different viruses due to the wind is leading to flu. Certain viruses are self-limiting in nature, but they are also strongly contagious, leading to all members getting affected. This pattern has been noticed in the city in the last few days where all members of the family are diagnosed with flu.”

The virus is self-limiting, but in those who are immune-compromised, the recovery is very slow. Dr S. Shanker of the Fever Hospital says that if the fever has lasted for more than three days, he opts for the swine flu test.

In the first week of August, 186 samples were tested by the Institute of Preventive Health, and 21 were positive for swine flu. A senior government doctor explains that the numbers being tested are high because of the increased surveillance.

“People are coming to hospitals on time and early detection is helping us manage the cases properly,” he added.
