Kerala government to approach Supreme Court to re-admit students

The Kannur Medical College website did not contain an appropriate link for applicants to apply online for the MBBS course.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state government will approach the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Admis-sion Supervisory Com-mittee to grant admissions to those eligible among students whose admissions to Kannur and Karuna medical colleges were cancelled last year.

“Most of these students whose admissions were cancelled are more eligible to gain admission than many students who have got admission into government colleges,” the Chief Minister said in reply to a submission raised by Oppos-ition leader Ramesh Chennithala in the Assembly.

The Supreme Court on March 22 this year had upheld the High Court order cancelling the admissions of 180 medical undergraduate students in Kannur Medical College (150) and Karuna Medical College (30) citing irregularities in admission procedures. The HC had in October 2016 invalidated the admissions saying that the colleges did not publish the corrected prospectus on their website, and were not transparent in furnishing details regarding the admissions online.

Admissions of 30 students in Karuna Medical College were later approved; a perusal of their documents proved that they were eligible for admission. It is the fate of the remaining 150 students who had sought admission to Kannur Medical College that now hangs in the balance.

In 2016, the J.M. James committee had cancelled the admissions to the MBBS course made by Karuna Medical College and Kannur Medical College for violating its order on inviting online applications. It was found that there was no transparency in the admission process. The website of Karuna Medical College had closed the submission of online applications long before the date prescribed by the ASC.
